Reading Tobias Wolff's Old School, coincidentally another recent
novel about writers. The story weaves experiences meeting Frost,
Ayn Rand, & Hemingway who made visits to the author's prep school.
Modern consciousness, Frost said. What's that?...Fun- interesting book.

Looking forward to a hushed spring break.

. . . soft breeze. . .desert music. . . lazy bones are imminent!

"Still others refer to it as the fires of quiddity."

Paul Auster's "Oracle Night," short fiction- good.*
Characters are intentionally two dimensional; Auster
favors his own preoccupation of ideas -chance events
vs. fate &/ synchronicity- rather than creating anyone
too real, interesting or enigmatic. A story about writers,
lovers, illness, usually dark, nothing too dramatic nor
poetic ... except his extensive footnote device at times
creating a mysterious fusion of past-present-future.

'
*I liked this book, Auster's technical austerity, taking
risks in subtle ways. I often think an artist's persona/
style resembles their name.

dreaming oneself, I erected, my love, in the silence of my disquiet,
this strange book with portals open at the end of an avenue.

Surprise...
Last night Bob Dylan at the Aragon Ballroom played keyboards
instead of guitar....from 1-10, a 3. Not that he wasn't lively, his
side 'addressed' the audience during every song, given that the
electric piano faced sideways stage left. He danced and flounced
his hands in a playful way -kind of hit or miss {how he blows a
harmonica}. The standing room crowd {sold-out within 5 minutes
I heard someone say} seemed to enjoy. Last minute free tickets
were given to us, otherwise I might have felt ripped off. Dylan's
genius, always mysterious, has definitely been 100% great in
past performances {so I've been told}. $5 for bottled waters,
$20 parking- I sha'n't complain.

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from
emotion; it is not the expression of personality, but an escape
from personality. But of course, only those who have personal-
ity and emotions know what is means to want to escape from
these things.
